A question my American coworkers ask me is "what are the major parties in Canada?" I don't know if they mean "major" as in "has more than ten seats in the House of Commons" or "major" as in "actually won a federal election at some point since July 1 1867."

What is your definition of a "major" Canadian political party?

I would probably say a major Canadian political party is a party which holds a large number of seats and at leasts holds the possibility of holding an official opposition in government. Which is why I include the NDP and Green (as well as the Bloc, although they are only regional). If you want to say held seats then it could only be Liberals and Conservatives - they are probably the only two parties in my eyes which could actually be government in the foreseeable future ... So it would depend on your interpretation I guess, and your coworker's interpretation.
